The round cut is, by far, the most preferred diamond shape, the cut is also the most optically brilliant because of its 360-degree symmetrical shape. A round brilliant is a great choice if you want the most sparkle and the most enduring classic shape. The round silhouette works with almost every mounting, from classic solitaires to the most avant-garde designs.

The cushion cut has a square or rectangular outline with rounded corners. While the preferred shape has a 1:1 ratio, we most often see the cushion in a slightly elongated to elongated shape. The cushion cut is also referred to as an ‘antique square or modified cushion’ when cut in the square shape. It has 58 brilliant facets that resemble a pillow shape, hence the name “Cushion”. The cushion shape is an ‘antique style of cut’, evolved from the "Old Mine Cut" that was developed before the turn of the century.

The radiant cut is either a square or rectangle in shape, and like the emerald, the radiant cut is distinguishable by its blocked (cut) corners. The radiant is a beautiful combination of the classic emerald cut but with the faceted sparkle of the round brilliant or princess cut, because it combines the step cutting of the emerald with the triangular faceting of the brilliant cut.

The shape of an oval diamond is recognizable, as its shape is defined by its name. The sparkle of the brilliant cut combined with the elongated shape of the oval makes it the perfect shape to accentuate long, slender fingers or at least give the appearance of longer, slender fingers. The length-to-width ratio of the oval’s dimensions will determine the outline, or what it the diamond will look like when viewed from the top. A ratio of 1.33 to 1.66 is the traditional range of oval shaped diamonds.

The pear shape most resembles a ‘teardrop’ with its rounded end on one side and a tapering point at the other. The pear is considered a feminine shape and the more elongated its shape is, the more slender your fingers will appear. Pear shape diamonds can vary in their length and width ratios, with the most common ratios varying between 1.45 and 1.75.

The Marquise cut is an elongated shape with tapering points at both ends. Its shape allows the cutter to maximize carat weight, giving the appearance of a larger-looking diamond and tends to flatter the finger, making it appear longer. The most traditional marquise-cut diamonds, have a length-to-width ratios between 1.75 and 2.25.

Other Fancy diamond shapes are: Trilliant/Triangle, Baguette, Half Moon, Kite, Old European, Old Mine Cut, and Trapezoid.

DIAMOND CARAT (WEIGHT)

The diamond carat weight refers to the actual weight of the diamond. For comparison, 200 milligrams equals 1 carat. Every carat can be allocated into 100 points. For example, a diamond which weighs 0.50 carats, can also be referred to a 50 point, 50 pointer diamond, or half carat diamond.

Carat weight refers not to the size of the stone, but the weight of it; two stones may have identical carat weights but have different length x width measurements depending on the cut. If you want to choose a smaller carat weight stone, opt for a higher cut grade, as this will make the stone appear larger. When selecting a stone for a specific budget, try to go slightly under a full or half carat weight, because prices jump at those sizes. For example, a 1.9ct stone will cost less than a 2.0ct, and because carat weight is distributed across the entirety of the diamond, that size difference would be nearly impossible to detect.

DIAMOND CLARITY

Clarity is referred to as the purity or quality of a diamond and is the relative measurement of the inclusions and blemishes as determined by a gemologist using a special scope and a 10x magnification loupe.

THE DIAMOND CLARITY SCALE & CHART

It is the visibility, number and size of these inclusions that determine the diamond's clarity grade. The better the clarity of a diamond is, the greater the brilliance and it also increases the value or price of the diamond.

Diamond clarity is measured on a scale from Flawless (FL) or Internally Flawless (IF) to Included (I1, I2, and I3). Each of these characteristics are plotted on a diamond diagram that is included on the diamond's grading certificate.

WHICH CLARITY GRADE SHOULD I CHOOSE?

Most people seem to think they need to purchase a diamond with a clarity grading no lower than VS2, however, we believe you can go as low as I1 depending on the diamond’s shape and where the inclusions are located. The jump in price from an SI2 to VVS1 clarity is significant but with an SI, you could still have an “eye clean” diamond on your hands without the high price tag.

Below is a sample clarity diagram that shows how inclusions and other characteristics will be represented on your diamond certificate.

DIAMOND CUT

Of the Four Cs, a diamond’s cut has the greatest influence on its appearance and price, as it is the cut of a diamond which creates the sparkle we love so much.

WHAT IS A DIAMOND'S CUT?

The cut of a diamond does not refer to shape (e.g. round, oval), rather it speaks to the diamond’s symmetry, proportions, and polish. A diamond’s cut is the positioning of facets, which modifies the shape and appearance of a diamond. If a diamond is cut poorly, it will be less brilliant, so diamond cutters have to consider several factors, such as the shape and size of the rough crystal when choosing a diamond’s cut.

Although difficult to analyze, the general beauty of a diamond is directly related to the cut of the diamond. The diamond cut has three crucial properties, which affect the appearance:

Brilliance : The brightness of the white light that is reflected from the interior and exterior of the diamond. The light enters through the top of the diamond and gets broken down into rainbow like colors.

Fire : The dispersion of "white light" into the colors of the rainbow. The spectacular appearance of the rainbow colors when the diamond is tilted from side to side.

Scintillation : The amount of rainbow colors the diamond produces). Also known as sparkle, the pattern of light and dark achieved by reflections within the diamond.

DIAMOND CUT TYPES - GRADING SCALE

When grading the cut of a diamond the grading laboratories consider the craftsmanship of the diamond, such as the weight relative to breadth, girdle thickness (which affects durability), the symmetry of the facet arrangement, and polishing quality. Unfortunately, there is not an agreed-upon scale for diamond cuts within the industry like there is for color or clarity, which can be confusing to consumers. MiaDonna uses the most ‘standardized’ scale when pricing our lab-created diamonds and Elite collection.

IDEAL	A desirable and rare cut that reflects nearly all light that enters the diamond. These diamonds have the most desirable dimensions and are proportioned to return the maximum possible light. Roind diamonds will show a 'hearts and arrows' facet patern.
EXCELLENT	Exquisite quality cut to create the optimal combination of brilliance and fire. Reflects nearly all light that enters the diamond. Top 3% of diamond quality based on cut.
VERY GOOD	Superior quality cut that reflects nearly as much light as the ideal cut while at a substantially lower cost than an ideal cut.
GOOD	Premium quality cut to optimize the size without sacraficing quality and beauty. Still a quality diamond, reflects most light that enters, but a good cut will not be as brilliant as a very good, excellent or ideal cut.
FAIR	Diamonds with a cut of fair or poor are typically cut deep and narrow or shallow and wide causing them to lose most of the light out the sides and bottom. Amrrutam does not carry diamonds with cut grades of fair or poor.

TYPES OF DIAMOND CUTS - WHAT TO CHOOSE?

The cut is the most important part of a diamond’s beauty, so selecting the highest cut grade your budget will allow is highly recommended. A higher cut means you can go lower in color and clarity without sacrificing the diamond’s overall beauty.

A higher cutting grade can make a diamond appear visually larger than its carat weight.

While diamonds have differing qualities when it comes to brilliance, fire, and scintillation, a well-cut diamond will always appear beautiful.

Diamonds that are poorly cut appear dull and glassy and most often have dark areas from where the light ‘leaks’ out from the sides or bottom.

Diamonds with the highest cut grades cost more, not only because they are the most beautiful, but because of the time it takes a skilled cutter who is highly experienced to achieve such a quality cut.

DIAMOND COLOR

When discussing a diamond’s color, we are referring to the whiteness, or lack of color present in the diamond itself. Most diamonds used in jewelry are nearly colorless with tints of yellow or brown.

For colorless diamonds there can still be a variation in color. On a scale from D (colorless) to X (light yellow). A "colorless" rated diamond allows more light to pass through the stone making it sparkle more and increases the overall value.

FANCY COLORED DIAMONDS

Fancy colored diamonds are not graded on the same scale as colorless diamonds and are rarer, making them more valuable and expensive.

DIAMOND COLOR SCALE

Color grades are determined by comparing each diamond to a master set. Each letter grade represents a range of color and is a measure of how noticeable a color is.

D,E,F	COLORLESS	These diamonds are completely colorless and very rare. They also come at a much higher price point. For customers who are looking for completely colorless, icy white diamonds, it is worth paying the premium price point.
G,H,I,J	NEAR COLORLESS	A slight undertone of yellow can be detected by an expert gemologist. However, the slight tint in G and H diamonds is virtually undetected by the average person. At I and J, the tint becomes a bit more apparent when compared to a diamond of higher color grade. Diamonds in this range offer great value, especially if you prefer a warmer look to your jewelry.
K,L,M	FAINT	A yellow color is more noticeable at this point, even without having to compare with a higher color grade diamond. At this time we don't sell diamonds for engagement rings less than a K unless it is by special request.
N-R	VERY LIGHT	Very noticeable yellow tint and looks like a poor quality diamond, even to an untrained eye.
S-Z	LIGHT	Color at this range can start to have a brown tint. Needless to say, there is very little demand for these.

WHICH DIAMOND COLOR SHOULD I CHOOSE?

If you are a purist, look for a diamond graded colorless in the range of D-F to ensure your diamond has no discernible color.

If you are budget conscious, you can get a fantastic diamond value by choosing a G-J color diamond. Most often you will notice little or no color with the naked eye.
